Triathlon on a Budget

There is some debate over the affordability of triathlon.  One of the magazines that I recommend you don't buy had a feature on this and managed to miss the point completely.  They confused the issue between the performance of budget kit and the cost of getting into the sport.  The article made the sport appear to be quite expensive ... and it sort of is ... however...

You only need 5 pieces of kit:

  • Trisuit (or your alternative)
  • Bike
  • Helmet
  • Goggles
  • Run shoes

The biggest problem you're going to face is getting to the venue unless it's within pedalling distance.  Someone you know will happily give you and your bike a lift.  It's better if it's another competitor as the early start may put others off.

So what is the real cost of triathlon?

Bike: a servicable bike will set you back £350

Goggles: a good pair for £18

Trisuit: £15 (it is possible)

Shoes: probably around £40

Helmet: you'll be able to get one for £25

Race entry: £45

Fuel: (optional) £15 (if it's realatively local)

So your total will be £508

You can obviously spend more than this or be really lucky and get your hands on some quality bargains.
