Bike

This might seem obvious but there are several kinds of bike each with differing variations.  If you're interested in the different types of bikes available watch the following videos:

Mountain Bikes

Hybrids

Roadies

TT/Triathlon Bikes

If you've just watched the video for the TT bike calm down.  They start at over £2000 and go up to £9000.  If you're spending more on a race-specific bike than you have on any other item you own then you probably should re-evaluate your life.

You can enter a multi-sport race with any bike that is road-legal so if you have an old Mountain Bike (MTB) then get it serviced at a cycle shop and you can start training.  Accept that you won't be the fastest cyclist in the race but if you're starting out you already know you won't be.  The most important thing is being comfortable and being able to handle your ride.  If someone has a TT bike and can't ride it properly then the stronger rider on the MTB or Hybrid will embarrass them every time.

If you don't have a bike then look at getting a re-cycled bike from a local community project.  These are successfully springing up all over so you should be able to find one near you.  They also run maintenance workshops so you can keep your bike in good nick.
